Galapatha Buddhist Temple
Galapata Vihara is a Buddhist temple located in Beruwala, a town on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest temples in the area and is believed to have been built during the reign of King Parakramabahu I (1153-1186).
The temple is known for its unique architecture, which is a blend of Indian and Sri Lankan styles. It is particularly famous for its intricate carvings and frescoes, which adorn the walls and ceilings of the temple.
One of the most notable features of Galapata Vihara is the 15-meter-tall Buddha statue, which is one of the largest in Sri Lanka. The statue is carved out of solid rock and is considered to be a masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan sculpture.
The temple also houses a museum that contains a collection of artifacts and relics, including ancient coins, pottery, and other objects of historical significance.
Galapata Vihara is a popular tourist attraction and a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. It is located close to the beach and offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape.
